I give it four out of five stars. My wife’s grandparents were living in Iran during the Islamic revolution of 1979. Her grandpa was a plant manager for Chrysler then left after Khomeini took power. Beyond that, I didn’t know much about the history. I was most struck by the strength imbued into Marjane due to the context of her upbringing. This grit that comes from the struggle of seeing death and injustice daily, but continuing to fight and believe in what is right. That unwillingness to change who you are in order to get along because you believe in a better world and will fight for it even against a potential execution. Her journey is all the more remarkable to me because I’m a male, middle class white guy that has lived a sheltered existence. My life in captivity that keeps me fat but not hungry, protected from greatness by safety.
